Silver Lining

One of the many wonderful things about opening up your own vintage store (online or not) is that you have the full right to go thrifting whenever you please…for as long as you please…for as much stuff as you please.

Let me tell you, I have managed to build a lovely little inventory in a short period of time.

But every once and a while you come across a piece that you almost can’t stand to let go of.

Almost.

This dress is definitely one of those pieces for me. It’s soft silvery color looks so feminine and ethereal, and the barely-there weight of the fabric makes me feel like I’m walking around dressed in a breeze. Not to mention it’s a wrap dress so it’s instantly classic.

BUT!

I need to practice letting go of even my most precious items, so I decided to add it to my store (click here to check out the listing)

Breaking up is hard to do…

Green Stems

I’ve wanted green jeans for ages and of course H&M comes through in the clutch.

Wearing them isn’t as hard as it would seem. It’s surprisingly easy to pair them with other colors (which, as we know, is very “hot” right now) as long as you give all those brights some neutrals to work against. I chose a nude blazer and pumps for that job.

Color blocking is an easy way to make a rainy day seem less dismal.

The trip to Chucks Burger Bar didn’t hurt either.

It’s amazing how quickly a diet can get thrown in the trash as soon as there are no impending bikini-wearing-vacations looming over ones head… although summer is coming, and that’s just one long bikini-wearing-vacation.

…oops

Come one, come all!

So, my faithful and beautiful readers, I’m sure you’ve realized that I have a bit of a thing for vintage (what? no…)

And by “thing” I actually mean “raving passion”

Which is why I’ve decided to stop hording all of my fabulous finds. If I was to sit on them forever and not let anyone else enjoy them, I would completely be going against the whole spirit of vintage.

Therefore, without further ado, I present to you my new online Etsy store

Pieces Vintage Boutique!      <—- (Click here to visit)

You’ll be able to find some things that I’ve shown in my posts as well as lots of other great finds that I’ve been keeping all to myself. Think of it as “private closet access” for all my favorite people.

I’m operating out of my apartment in Hamilton (obvi) and if you’re ever in the area and want to check out something you’ve seen online, shoot me an e-mail and I’m sure we can make something work.

So take your time, browse around, and enjoy!

The 2xVacation Photo Diary

So today marks the official resumption of normal life.

How tragic.

I’ve calculated that since the beginning of April, I have worked a total of 3 days.

What a glorious month.

My trip to the Dominican was nothing short of paradise, and Vegas was one big wonderful whirlwind. Neither of which will soon be forgotten.

I’ll be back to my normal rambling self soon enough. Until then, enjoy the briefness of my writing.

Here are some snapshots of my adventures…

P.S. Thank you to Britta, Kemal and Olga for taking some of these pics. Such reliable paparazzi you all are.

Technical Difficulties

So you may have noticed my little blog went AWOL over the last week.

After receiving several frantic phone calls (mostly from my mother) about the whereabouts of The Fashion Kitchen, I’m happy to say we’re back!

Terribly sorry about that.

I leave for vacation in 2 days and I thought I’d post a summery outfit to keep myself in the spirit.

Dos cervezas por favor!

Patch Work

I snagged this vintage beauty of a dress a few months back when I was out shopping with a friend. Without the waist tie it’s a bit of a sack (and not in the cute hipster way), but when hiked up above the knee it becomes quite charming.

It cooled down a bit since yesterday so I layered up with a nice thick blazer (last seen here) and some comfy wedges for afternoon errands.

It was as “low maintenance” as I was willing to look today.

Happy Monday darlings!

A Different Kind of Cargo

I’ll just come right out and say it.

Alice & Olivia make some of the best silk pants out there.

I have three different pairs of their bottoms now and I will continue to snap them up whenever they come out.

These silk cargo pants are the perfect example of the elusive “refined casual” look that I love so dearly, but always seem to have trouble finding. What I love about these is that they can be spiffed up with a silk blouse (like I did today) or I can throw them on with a white t-shirt and chucks, grab a big slouchy bag and somehow not look like a complete slob.

A wonderful quality for any piece to have.

I hope you all enjoyed this ridiculously beautiful weather. I know I did.

I haggled with a lady over a bust form that wasn’t actually for sale and then I went for a run for the first time in…my entire life.

It was a big day for me.

The Urban Explorers

The industrial part of Hamilton (or “Mordor” as Rob and I affectionately call it) is one of my favourite places to wander through. Everything has this looming, larger-than-life quality that I enjoy. Almost like an urban elephant graveyard.

Also makes for an interesting shooting location. So win/win.

On a side note, I bought (and adore) this Cambridge Satchel Co. bag but cannot find anywhere to get it monogrammed. If anyone knows a place that does leather embossing, please let me know. I know it’s pretentious, but I don’t care. I’d monogram everything if I could.

Do you think I could monogram Cat?

Lipsy Love

About 4 years ago, an old friend of mine returned from a trip abroad and couldn’t stop gushing about a brand called Lipsy. As she pulled up the website, she excitedly told me to brace myself for the cutest dresses I’d ever seen.

She did not disappoint.

Page after page of every kind of dress you could imagine, all in the prettiest patterns, swishiest fabrics and the most fabulous colors.

However, they don’t have any stores in Canada and I’m not a “shopping online” kind of girl, so this beautiful brand fell to the back of my mind. It wasn’t until my last trip to the UK that I stumbled upon a Lipsy store and naturally, I just had to go inside and try absolutely everything on. I came out with a few prizes, but this romper is by far my favorite find (you can’t tell from the picture, but it continues up into a halter)

I wear it more in the summer (for obvious reasons) but all this sunshine made me want to throw on something a bit lighter.

If shopping online doesn’t phase you, check out www.lipsy.co.uk. Shipping is only $5.

I might need to re-evaluate my policy on internet shopping.

Yes, because what I really need is a whole new shopping platform.

Terrifying.

Baby It’s Cold Outside

And boy did I not dress accordingly.

This is the first time I’ve gone without pantyhose in months, and I chose a terrible day to do it. It is bloody freezing.

However the nude pumps just didn’t look as nude if they weren’t directly against my paler-than-a-ghost skin and I desperately needed their leg-lenghtening power more than I needed to keep warm.

I’m sure my doctor would disagree, but he doesn’t wear knee-length dresses (I assume) so he wouldn’t understand.

I haven’t worn this Pink Tartan dress in months but todays sunshine compelled me to step into something a little bit brighter. Well, a few things actually.

You may find yourself asking “With all that color, why opt for a leopard scarf?” and to you I say…

Why not my dears, why not.
